Late this afternoon, a wildfire broke out in the Bureau of Land Management's grass fields near Middleton, ID. Middleton is close enough to Meridian for us to see and smell the smoke. Winds are whipping up the high desert area, fanning the flames and causing the haze to cover the entire valley. Two air tankers and one helicopter are assisting the ground crews in protecting the structures that are currently threatened. The winds are making control, much less containment, impossible at the moment. Every fiber of my being recognizes the danger and physically remembers the disastrous San Diego wildfires of 2003 and 2007. After living through those tragic events as well as the Guejito fire in the 1990's which surrounded our Escondido home and caused our evacuation, it's natural for me to react and want to run. And, as scary as the fire is, it is familiar and strangely comforting: I haven't left everything behind for some life devoid of anything I recognize.
Wildfire...another thing the Treasure Valley holds in common with SoCal.
