Butterfly kisses and the last day of summer break

Today was Damien's last day of summer before fifth grade and what did we do?  Well, Carl went off to try out for the winter season of WipeOut (big red balls, anyone?), Nate went to school and Damien and I spent the day at the Western Idaho State Fair, again.  This time, the temperature was below 90 and the crowds were very light, making the fair more bearable in this high desert climate.  Our favorite thing this time around was viewing the traveling Monarch butterfly exhibit.  As we entered, we were handed Q-Tips with the instruction of dipping one end in the nectar located in bowls around the exhibit.  This way, we could "pick up" the butterflies and have them hang around with us for the duration of our visit in the conservatory.  These creatures are gentle, majestic, beautiful and amazing.  Did you know that, though the individual butterfly may only live two to five weeks, they migrate as a group every year from Canada to Mexico, over 3000 miles?

Makes me feel even sadder for the ones that ended up splattered on my windshield in Carlsbad while on their way to the border.

As for the butterfly kisses?  The only thing the butterflies were allowed to kiss in this exhibit were the nectar-soaked Q-Tips.
